Mombasa, Kenya – The coastal city of Mombasa vibrated with a powerful message of solidarity and inclusion as it marked World Refugee Day 2026 on June 20. Under the poignant theme, “Solidarity with Refugees: Until Everyone is Safe,” the celebrations brought together urban refugees, host communities, and human rights advocates in a vibrant display of unity and a renewed call for dignity and protection. The day’s events, which included a spirited procession through Mombasa City’s main streets, culminated at the SwahiliPot Hub Grounds, featuring cultural dances, dramatic skits, and compelling lived testimonies from members of the urban refugee community.

The World Refugee Day 2026 celebrations garnered significant attention from both national and local media outlets, a testament to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights prior media sensitization efforts. Prominent national broadcasters like NTV and TV47, alongside digital platforms such as TUKO Media and The Eastleigh Voice, and local radio stations including Msenangu FM and Baraka FM 95.5, provided extensive coverage. This widespread media engagement focused on the challenges faced by urban refugees, their appeals for inclusion, dignified income opportunities, and enhanced protection.

KNCHR’s social media platforms also played a crucial role, actively promoting the 2026 World Refugee Day events in Mombasa, including a solidarity walk and discussions centered on the theme “Solidarity with Refugees: Until Everyone is Safe.”

The media’s comprehensive coverage of World Refugee Day 2026 was significantly influenced by the KNCHR’s familiarization and sensitization session held on June 19, 2026. This training equipped journalists with a Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) to reporting, ensuring that the narratives highlighted the human dignity of refugees and advocated for their inclusion and protection. The emphasis on understanding refugee entitlements and holding duty bearers accountable was evident in the quality and focus of the media reports.
